Year Of Qualification Criteria 

To be eligible for JEE Main 2026, candidates must have passed class 12 in the year 2024 or 2025. Candidates appearing for class 12th exams in 2026 are also eligible. 

Number Of Attempts For The IIT JEE 2026

NTA conducts JEE Main twice a year in January and April. And the number of attempts criterion stays the same for all types of candidates: new aspirants, repeaters, and droppers. Here is some brief information about the number of attempts criterion:

  • Can attempt JEE Main consecutively for 3 years, meaning 6 attempts in total.

A domicile requirement arises only for the state quota seats in IITs, NITs, and other state-level colleges. No such criteria for general students. Candidates must have passed class 12 boards from a specific state and get a valid domicile certificate for the same. This is based on the location of the qualifying exam, not in native place.

Paper 2B (B.Planning): Mathematics in Class 12 is mandatory.

4. Year of Qualification Eligible candidates must have passed Class 12 in 2024 or 2025. Students appearing for Class 12 in 2026 are also eligible.
5. Number of Attempts • JEE Main is conducted twice a year (January & April).

• Candidates can attempt JEE Main for 3 consecutive years (up to 6 attempts in total).

• Candidates can appear in both sessions within the same year.

6. Domicile Criteria (State Code of Eligibility) Applicable only for state quota seats in IITs, NITs, and other state-level colleges. • Candidates must have passed Class 12 from a specific state and possess a valid domicile certificate.• The state code is determined by the location of the qualifying exam, not the native place.
7. Nationality Criteria Indian nationals are eligible.• Foreign nationals, OCIs (Overseas Citizens of India), PIOs (Persons of Indian Origin), and NRIs (Non-Resident Indians) are also eligible to appear for the exam.

Eligibility Criteria For JEE Main 2026 For Droppers 

A large number of droppers apply to the IIT JEE every year. Candidates who have taken a drop year and are planning to appear in JEE Main 2026 must meet these eligibility criteria: 

  • Candidates who are droppers of any age who meet the educational eligibility criteria, and others, can apply. There is no upper or lower age limit criterion.
  • The candidate must have passed class 12 or equivalent examination in 2024 and 2025.
  • The number of attempts stays the same. 6 attempts in total for 3 consecutive years. 
  • Including Physics, Math’s, and Chemistry, candidates must have studied at least 5 subjects in class 12. 
  • No minimum marks required to attempt JEE Main. Candidates should meet the qualifying marks set by individual institutions for admission. 

IIT JEE Eligibility Criteria For Repeaters

NTA allows multiple JEE Main Exam attempts so that candidates are fairly given a chance to improve their scores. Here is the IIT JEE exam eligibility criteria for repeaters 

  • Candidates who have passed class 12 or equivalent examination in 2024 and 2025. 
  • From the year of the first attempt, a candidate can give the exam for 3 consecutive years.
